After the re-boot of Superman in 1986, DC wanted Superman to be the only surviving Kryptonian and DC reintroduced Supergirl with a non-Kryptonian origin - a lifeform comprised of synthetic protoplasm created by a heroic Lex Luthor in a different dimension. She possessed flight and super-strength and psychokinesis, shape-shifting and a cloaking/invisibility power. In this series, the previous Supergirl was merged with a human being, resulting in a new Supergirl.
